Abbey College GCSE students were given the opportunity to join an Amnesty International Workshop.  Ellis Brooks came in to educate students about Human Rights, how they effect everyone and the work of Amnesty International.

During the morning, the students learnt about their rights and responsibilities and worked in small groups to take action.  The students wrote letters to various companies, countries and MP's to put pressure on those who violate human rights.  The students each chose their biggest concern and considered the best way to help the person in question.  The students were particularly moved by the false imprisonment of political prisoners and the lack of justice in some countries and reflected on the personal freedoms that they enjoy in this country.

The afternoon was spent considering the human impact of asylum seekers, including various sources and role play from the students themselves to demonstrate.  Our newly elected MP. Shabana Mahmood, will shortly receive a letter from each student voicing their concern about the destitute asylum seekers in England and the difficulties they face on a daily basis.  The students aim was to ask our MP to consider the problem and how we might address it as a country.

The day was very successful, students were careful to consdier the best course of action for themselves and gave their thanks to Ellis Brooks for coming in and spending his time with them.
