Student of the Month
At Abbey College, we strive to recognise and celebrate those students who have done something a little extra. Students are nominated each month by staff who think that a particular student has stood out; the winner is determined by whoever gets the most votes.
The criteria for nomination ranges across all areas of college life, such as consistently working hard in all subjects or setting an example to other students or helping other students settle in by becoming a buddy or mentor. Motivating sports team captains or particularly proactive members of the college council are also popular reasons for nomination. Each month the winner is announced and the reason for their award in year meetings, and a certificate is put up in their form room. We then display the students photograph the reason for their winning on a dedicated wall in the college. The winners range across year groups and are genuinely respected and supported by their peers.
Student of the month - May 2013 - Dang Anh Duc Luong (Derek)
Derek has been nominated as student of the month for May 2013. Derek has only been here since January but has made remarkable progress, bringing himself up from zero knowledge to exam standard in a very short space of time. He is not only very driven but is a great student to have in class as he is enquiring, enthusiastic and has a great sense of humour! Derek is bright but, more importantly, has an amazing work ethic and makes the most of every opportunity to develop.
Well done Derek!
Student of the month - February 2013 - Thanh Tung Pham (Anthony)
Anthony was nominated as student of the month because he is consistently hard working, focussed in lessons, enthusiastic about learning and always on time. He has a natural thirst for more, and always contributes to class discussions. He is very helpful to other students in his own time and often asks questions in lesson that will help everyone learn. He has made a huge effort to improve his English language skills and continues to make good progress. If for any reason Anthony has to miss a lesson he will seek out the teacher and request the catch up work, which he then produced to a high standard for the following lesson. He takes on board feedback and actively looks for ways in which he can improve.
Anthony is an excellent role model for all students and is very deserving of his award of student of the month!

For her outstanding commitment to the Buddy program. Although all the students involved in the program have done a great job and deserve some recognition, Priya has gone that extra mile. Not only has she been involved since the very beginning she has gone above and beyond the call of duty by staying involved in the project for longer than it has originally been agreed. She has been actively involved in the recruitment and training of new Buddies and is always willing give up her free periods, often without much advanced notice, without complaint and always with a smile. Most impressively, she is constantly on the look out for things that she could do, and ideas on how to do it better. Priya has been an inspiration for other members in her form, who after seeing her outstanding commitment have since decided to join the program. We hope that in the future all buddies show the same level of commitment and willingness to help.
