Why study History at Abbey College Birmingham?
A-level History allows students to develop key interpretation, evaluation and analytical skills that can be applied to most degree courses. We have especially small classes and spend a lot of time on exam preparation.
Subject Overview
The AS units are designed to help prepare you for the A2 units so, for example, where you learn essay skills with the Wars of the Roses at AS you develop those essay skills as you go onto Tudor Rebellions at A2, which extends both your subject knowledge and your skills. This era is full of intrigue and gossip about unsuitable marriages and usurpations of kings. You will also study Germany 1933-1963 which includes the Nazis and the post war era - both of which cannot fail to make a moral and cultural impression on those studying it. This unit, as well as the coursework component, focuses on the interpretation and evaluation of sources as evidence, which, when combined with the structured arguments that you produce through your essay skills, prepare you most effectively for higher education.
Teaching Approaches
The approach to teaching History is flexible due to the nature of the subjects and the different skills that you need to learn. We often hold class debates, have student presentations or carry out role play. Notes are also provided.
Higher Education Opportunities
- History is considered a particularly analytical subject and is valued in support of any degree application, but the skills are especially sought after by those seeking a future in law or the humanities.
