Subject Overview
At Abbey the Sciences (Biology, Chemistry and Physics) can be studied together as part of the AQA Science GCSE, further studied to make up an Additional Science GCSE, or, for those hoping to follow a science based career such as dentistry or medicine, three separate GCSEs in Biology, Chemistry and Physics can be studied.
Science
Three 45 min. exams papers (C1, B1 and P1) plus a centre assessed
practical skills paper.
Each paper has a 25% weighting.
Additional Science
Three 45 min. exams papers (C2, B2 and P2) plus a centre assessed
practical skills unit.
Each paper has 25% weighting
Separate Sciences
Three 45 min. papers for each science (e.g. C1, C2 C3 for chemistry), plus a centre assessed practical skills paper.
Each paper has a 25% weighting
Teaching Approaches
A mix of approaches, involving extensive use of hands-on laboratory practical work, ICT supported classroom teaching, group work and one to one support, is varied according to the needs of the students and the demands of the subject. Everything is done to take full advantage of the small teaching group size and the friendly, supportive atmosphere within the college.
