Pastoral Care

At Abbey College, student welfare is always our prime concern. Every student, on entry to the college, is assigned a personal tutor with whom they meet once weekly; for GCSE and A Level students, this is in a formal session.

This enables staff to develop strong guiding relationships with students outside of the role of teacher. Students can discuss their academic progress, as well as any concerns that hinder this progress, with an individual who has a genuine interest in their well-being.

Personal tutors are always aware that students might need to speak with them outside of the formal session and make time for this.

Students are also supported by a number of individuals, including the Heads of Year and Pastoral Manager. We closely follow Child Protection guidance and expectations.

International students' integration into college life and the city of Birmingham is organised and supported by the International Student Support Coordinator, Jessie Venegas.

Our aim is to provide an environment in which all of our students feel that they can highlight any problem that will be listened to and addressed within a circle of confidentiality.

Moreover, student well-being informs our annual curriculum plan. Themes that are close to students' interests (for example, 'the environment'; 'freedom'; 'tolerance' and 'being healthy') are embedded in the academic planner.
